Happy Pride Month!

June is Pride Month, which is both thrilling and stressful! Being a DJ, working in radio, and being gay, June is full of events. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Each year, I try to publicly acknowledge the fact that I am so so so lucky to be able to celebrate Pride Month. I am so lucky to be able to live my life as an openly gay man (since I was 15), and to be involved in such a colorful, talented, hilarious, artistic, and brave community. I fully recognize that I have it extremely easy. I am white, privileged, accepted, fairly good looking, and have never had to fear for my life.

I often think about how I could be doing more to help those who aren’t in a similar position. I make it a point to celebrate and uplift members in my own local community, but I still feel the responsibility to do more as someone with slight influence and the ability to do so. This year, I’m going to make it my mission to do something to give back. I’m not sure what that looks like yet, so I will likely start with a conversation with one of my friends who is more involved in charities/goodwill of others.

The fact that I can prance around to Ariana Grande, make money, and make this month a big party is something I do not take for granted. So many individuals have paved the way for me to have that, and there are still so many people who are fighting for their rights, for our rights. I’ll never wrap my mind around bigotry, or why others feel they have the agency to tell anyone who they can or can’t be. In the face of oppression, threats, and violence, our community will forever remain strong. We aren’t going anywhere. I believe it is necessary for those of us with the extreme privilege to feel safe and comfortable to make a difference for those who do not. If anyone reading this has any direction or ideas for me, I’m all ears.
